Lifeguard

Department:  Aquatics

Title:  Lifeguard

Reports to: Aquatics Supervisor / Aquatics Director

Position length:  Continuous –  10-30 Hours per week(varies)

 

Become part of our team!  River Road Park and Recreation District is now hiring lifeguards in preparation for Summer 2021.  Experienced lifeguards are encouraged to apply.  Day time, evening and, possibly weekend hours will be available.  A.R.C., E.A. and/or StarGuard certification required.

 

Not certified?  River Road Park and Recreation District will be offering two (2) StarGuard Lifeguard Training Programs.  Interested candidates are encouraged to apply to participate in one of these upcoming lifeguard training programs.  NOTE:  A portion of the StarGuard Lifeguard Training Program is “on-line”.  Candidates will be hired upon successful completion of the course.

 

CLASS ONE

Position Purpose

Works under the direct supervision of the Aquatic/Fitness Director, Aquatic Supervisor, and/or the Building Supervisor.  Performance reviewed by Aquatic/Fitness Director and Aquatic Supervisor with input from the Building Supervisor(s).  The Lifeguard position is classified in River Road Park and Recreation District's blood borne pathogen exposure control plan as a   classification one position.

Essential Responsibilities

Responsible for the safety and direct supervision of the patrons and fellow staff members in the pool, on the pool deck, in the spa/sauna area and in the fitness center.  Practices and maintains high safety and performance standards in compliance with River Road Park and Recreation District philosophies, policies and procedures.

 

Skills and Abilities

  1. Supervises patrons by interpreting and enforcing River Road Park and Recreation District policies, procedures and guidelines regarding public safety issues in an aquatic setting.

  2. Performs and/or assists in rescues and first aid in compliance with River Public Safety Road Park and Recreation District safety and emergency guidelines.

  3. Reports for duty in full uniform.  Participates in required staff in-service orientations, trainings, testing, and lifeguard meetings.  General custodial responsibilities, including laundry.

  4. Maintains a polite and courteous rapport with the public.  Manages public concerns as directed.

  5. May occasionally act as reception/patron intake person.

  6. Lifeguards may be required to stand for lengthy periods and/or walk on sloped, often wet, deck surfaces.  At any given moment, a River Road Park and Recreation District Lifeguard may be required to:  lift (in excess of 50 lbs.), climb, bend, squat, kneel, reach and/or push.

  7. May be required to carry heavy equipment. 
     

Minimum Qualifications

Prior lifeguard experience, preferably in a Starfish Aquatics Institute partner facility.

Knowledge of: safe aquatic environment practices;  lifeguard “best practices”;  general water safety;  lifesaving methods; first aid and emergency procedures in an aquatic/fitness center environment;  basic customer service practices; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
Ability to: maintain constant, dedicated surveillance of the pool, surrounding area(s) and/or specific zone of responsibility; act calmly and effectively in emergency situations;  meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties;  identify hazards;  interpret, explain and adhere to River Road Park and Recreation District policies, procedures and guidelines;  address guests courteously and tactfully;  work effectively with people of all ages, ethnic origins, and social-economic backgrounds;  establish and maintain a courteous working relationship with fellow employees; maintain a neat, professional appearance;  and, report for assigned hours as scheduled.

Park Maintenance Specialist

 

River Road Park & Recreation District has an opening for the position of Park Maintenance Specialist. This position performs work in the maintenance, care, and modification of District grounds and landscapes which include the operation of equipment used in the planting, cultivation and general care of park horticulture. This position also performs general maintenance on equipment and tools; makes minor repairs as directed. Performs routine evaluation of the grounds to ensure a safe and sanitary park system. Assesses District vehicles to assure they are safe and operational. Works under the supervision of the Maintenance Director.

Work week is seasonally adjusted:

Tue-Sat 7am-4pm Spring, Summer

Mon-Fri 7am-4pm  Fall, Winter

 

 

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Performs general routine maintenance tasks including but not limited to turf care, mowing, trimming, tree and shrub care, litter, trash and debris removal, custodial work, and general safety evaluation of park facilities and equipment.

  2. Ensures District vehicles, mowers, tools, and equipment are maintained and in proper working condition.

  3. Provides all essential documentation of tree care, vehicle maintenance, pesticide use, OSHA training, etc.

  4. Maintains supply inventories of oil, fuels, filters, wiper blades, equipment parts, fertilizers, grass seed and treatments.

  5. Conducts safety inspections on playground apparatus and structures. Performs litter and sanitation protocols.

  6. Monitors irrigation system, water schedules, and soil conditions. Performs system testing, adjustments and repair.

  7. Performs general mechanical repair of park equipment, tractors, mowers, blowers, saws, trimmers, etc. needed to maintain facilities and grounds.

  8. Position also assists the pool operator with mechanical system operations, maintenance, chemical treatment and filtration as required.

  9. Interpret and follow instructions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals; appropriately identify and eradicate landscape disease and insect damage; orient and operate grounds maintenance, tools, equipment, and machinery.

              Skills and Abilities

  1. Ability to safely operate vehicles and equipment effectively including but not limited to riding mowers, utility tractors, push mowers, line trimmers, chain saws, hand saws, pole trimmers, etc.

  2. Knowledge of general landscaping and irrigation techniques, turf, tree and plant management issues common to Oregon zone 6, along with the basic principles regarding the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

 

Working Conditions

Work is performed mostly outside in both winter and summer environments, in all types of weather conditions while utilizing various types of machinery and equipment. Exposure to sun, rain, and extended use of equipment requires the use of daily PPE. Work is performed during a regularly scheduled workday or on occasion, after-hours call out basis. Position also requires physical labor including lifting, kneeling, crawling, standing, climbing, etc. Requires the ability to continually exert up to 50 pounds individually or up to 200 pounds with assistance.

             

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: High School graduate or GED. With two (2) years general grounds maintenance        minimum.  Oregon driver’s license, Pesticide Applicator License (Ornamental turf), Playground safety             certification, CPO (Certified Pool Operator), CPR or ability to obtain within 1 year.

ASAP / Summer Camp Leader

Department:  Recreation

Title:  ASAP / Summer Camp Leader

Reports to:  Youth Program Supervisor

Position Length:   30-35  hours per week  (varies)

 

Position Purpose

Assist the ASAP lead coordinator and ASAP Leader II in the implementation of after school or summer camp activities.  Oversee kindergarten through fifth grade youth in a recreational setting.   Organize and assist in activities for the ASAP and/or Adventure Day Camp Program, a comprehensive recreation program for children in grades kindergarten through fifth.

 

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Implement daily activities for students including arts and crafts projects as well as outdoor activities. Implement activities from set-up through clean-up, utilizing staff aides and volunteers. Assist with field trips, parties and special events.    

  2. Maintain a high level of safety and discipline within the group, both with the children and the staff.

  3. Establish a pleasant and enthusiastic rapport with children, staff and parents.

  4. Oversee children in both indoor/outdoor settings.

  5. Participate in District safety protocol for all events and programs; enforce District rules and regulations

 

Knowledge and Abilities

  1. Ability to establish excellent working relations and communication with supervisors, subordinates, and general public. 

  2. Must possess practical common sense skills while maintaining a strong work ethic and be able to adapt to a constantly changing and fast paced environment while maintaining a positive attitude. 

  3. Ability to take initiative with minimal supervision. 

  4. Safely operate District vehicles to pick up children from local schools. Strong oral and written communication skills.

  5. Ability to read, write, and speak the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance. 

Minimum Qualifications

GED preferred.  Current First Aid/CPR certification.   Current Oregon driver’s license required.
