Board of directors
Our Board of Directors is composed of five volunteer members elected by registered voters. Each board member serves a four-year term of office.

The Role and Responsibilities of the Board Members:
River Road Park & Recreation District is a special tax district formed in 1957 to administer park and recreation services in the River Road area. The Board is designated as the governing body for the District and has administrative authority.
The Board is made up of five members elected by voters who must reside within the District.
Individual board members do not have the authority to act on behalf of the District as individuals, only as members of the greater Board of Directors.
Public board meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:00 pm.
Jim Wienecke Chairman
Jim was born in Eugene in 1955 and graduated from Churchill High School, so he’s a true Eugene local. After high school, Jim went into the military, serving in the US Air Force for four years. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 41 years. During this time, he coached little league for six years, ran the concession stand for five years and is still responsible for the St. Peter’s Church ball fields. Jim also served on the board of the Eugene Challenger’s American Legion baseball organization for several years. He has been married to his wife Kathy for 41 years, has four adult children and three grandchildren. Jim has served on the Board of Director’s since 2006. His favorite volunteer activity has been flipping the thousands of pancakes served over the years at the District’s special event breakfasts.
Dennis Durfee Vice Chairman
Dennis was born in Vancouver, WA, and grew up as an Air Force dependent, living in Florida, Minnesota, England, Montana and Portland, where he graduated from Jefferson High School in 1962 and Portland State University in 1973. He served four years in the US Air Force. He married JoAnn in Beaverton in 1971, their kids were born in Portland, and they moved to River Road in 1979. After retiring from SAIF in 1999, he worked a few part-time jobs until completely retiring in 2007. In retirement he has kept busy with volunteer work, including serving on the River Road Park Board since in 2016.
Curt Kendall Director
Curt has served on the River Road Park Board since 2013. He graduated from North Eugene High School and has lived in the River Road community for several years. Curt attended Lane Community College and the National Cable Television Institute. He was employed for 37 years in the cable television industry. Curt enjoys golf, hiking, walking and gardening. He and wife Nancy have three children and five grandchildren.
Steve Norris Director
Steve is a long time District resident and park supporter. He served as a member of the River Road Park Budget Committee for a number of years before being appointed to the Board in 2018. He was elected to his current 4-year term in 2019. Retired from public service, Steve also serves on the River Road Water District board and is a past co-chair of the neighborhood association. “I’m proud to have a small role in providing such exceptional recreational and community-building opportunities to the community. We all, River Road and beyond, are very fortunate to have such well-run facilities, inclusive and diverse programming and special events to access. It’s a privilege to serve on the board and witness how dedicated, creative and motivated professional staff make it all happen. My goal is to listen, learn and contribute, however I’m able, to continued excellence and District success.”
Sharon Purdy Director
Sharon Purdy is a true life-long North Eugene/River Road resident. She attended River Road and Howard elementary schools, Kelly middle school, North Eugene H.S., and Lane Community College. Sharon is employed by Fred Meyer and in her spare time is a caregiver for At Ease home care. Sharon also volunteers at the Interfaith homeless shelter, Fred Meyer Foundation, River Rd. Community, Diana Kelly Ponds, Food for Lane County, Grassroots Garden, SOLV, BSA, & HIV Alliance. She holds dear her family, appreciates church, gardening, reading and a good ball game rooting for the underdog. Sharon is drawn to Oregon’s great outdoors and enjoys short hikes or a long drive to new or unexpected places. Sharon has had ties to the District since she was a child. Family swim nights, chick- flick pageants, parades, swim lessons, playing ball, & Fun Teen dances. Her father, Wendell Hall, previously served as a District board member. Sharon was elected to the vacated seat held by her father over two decades ago.

Sharon is the proud mother of two sons, Kris and Derek.
