Our Board of Directors is composed of five volunteer members elected by registered voters.  Each board member serves a four-year term of office.

The Role and Responsibilities of the Board Members:

River Road Park & Recreation District is a special tax district formed in 1957 to administer park and recreation services in the River Road area. The Board is designated as the governing body for the District and has administrative authority. 

 

The Board is made up of five members elected by voters who must reside within the District.

 

Individual board members do not have the authority to act on behalf of the District as individuals, only as members of the greater Board of Directors.

 

Public board meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:00 pm. 

 

 

 

Jim Wienecke              Chair

Jim was born in Eugene in 1955 and graduated from Churchill High School, so he’s a true Eugene local.  After high school, Jim went into the military, serving in the US Air Force for four years. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier for 41 years. During this time, he coached little league for six years, ran the concession stand for five years and is still responsible for the St. Peter’s Church ball fields. Jim also served on the board of the Eugene Challenger’s American Legion baseball organization for several years.  He has been married to his wife Kathy for 41 years, has four adult children and three grandchildren.   Jim has served on the Board of Director’s since 2006.  His favorite volunteer activity has been flipping the thousands of pancakes served over the years at the District’s special event breakfasts.

Curt Kendall             Vice Chair 

Curt Kendall has been a Eugene resident for 68 years. He studied at Lane Community College and the National Cable Television Institute. He worked 37 years in the cable television industry. Curt owned and operated Curt’s Commercial Maintenance business for over 20 years. 

Curt has been a park neighbor for 35 years. He has served on the River Road Park Budget Committee and joined the Board in 2013. He has served on the Board of Directors for Lane Utility Coordinating Council and also on the Oregon Utility Coordinating Council.

Curt and his wife Nancy have three children and five grandchildren. Curt was active and helped organize the Neighborhood Watch with his neighbors. Nancy and Curt have both completed Community Emergency Response Team training.

Curt enjoys golf, hiking, traveling and gardening. He and Nancy love visiting national parks.

Sharon Purdy               Director

Sharon Purdy is a true life-long North Eugene/River Road resident.  She attended River Road and Howard elementary schools, Kelly middle school, North Eugene H.S., and Lane Community College.  Sharon is employed by Fred Meyer and in her spare time is a caregiver for At Ease home care. Sharon also volunteers at the Interfaith homeless shelter, Fred Meyer Foundation, River Rd. Community, Diana Kelly Ponds, Food for Lane County, Grassroots Garden, SOLV, BSA, & HIV Alliance.  She holds dear her family, appreciates church, gardening, reading and a good ball game rooting for the underdog.  Sharon is drawn to Oregon’s great outdoors and enjoys short hikes or a long drive to new or unexpected places. Sharon has had ties to the District since she was a child. Family swim nights, chick- flick pageants, parades, swim lessons, playing ball, & Fun Teen dances.  Her father, Wendell Hall, previously served as a District board member.  Sharon was elected to the vacated seat held by her father over two decades ago.

 

“I feel fortunate to be a part of the activities, decisions, and future plans that our excellent staff are working so diligently towards. ‘Life, be in it ‘exemplifies the staff and patrons, of River Road Park and Recreation District, and all those who bring and have brought, their best to make it a recreational pleasure to experience. “                                               

Sharon is the proud mother of two sons, Kris and Derek.

MIchael Lambros        Director

Michael has been a resident of the River Road neighborhood for sixteen years after moving to Oregon from Hawaii to help his family. After purchasing his home in the neighborhood, Michael became involved with the River Road Community Organization and served on the board for several years. While working as a chef in town, Michael bought the drive through coffee kiosk Global Delights at the corner of Hillard and River Road and over the years has grown it into a commercial organic coffee roasting company. Michael and his team have raised over $40,000 for the River Road neighborhood through the sales of their coffee beans at the kiosk which has funded multiple programs for the neighborhood schools and the Global Delights Scholarship Fund at the River Road Park  & Recreation District. Michael has also served on the River Road Park District Budget Committee for several years before joining the Board of Directors. Michael has a deep passion to help his community and to enhance the livability of the neighborhood through vision, problem solving, collaboration and old fashion work projects. "I am humbled and appreciative to have been asked to join the Board of Directors of such a well managed and important asset to our neighborhood. I look forward to being helpful in any way I can to the Park District and our community at large."

Bob Blanchard            Director

Bob and his wife Debbie moved to the River Road area in 1981. They have two sons who graduated from local high schools.  Bob did technical support for the City of Eugene Public Works Department, Parks and Open Space Division for 26 years, retiring in 2017. 

In 2016, Bob and Debbie bought a house on Audel Avenue, just around the corner from the park. Bob has enjoyed working out at the park a couple times a week since they moved here.

His interests include bird watching, woodworking, and mushrooming. 

He is on the board of Cascade Mycological Society, and has participated in the Mt. Pisgah Mushroom Festival for many years. Bob is an enthusiastic supporter of parks and all they provide for our citizens.  He looks forward to being part of the guiding force behind maintaining and improving our local park.
