Title: Aquatic Supervisor

Reports to: Aquatic Director

Position Type:  Full Time – Salaried, Exempt

 

Position Purpose

The Aquatic Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Aquatic Director with the development, supervision, oversight, and operation of the aquatic facility including all facets of effective aquatic programming that serve the needs of the River Road Park and Recreation District community. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the recruitment, training, and supervision of staff; development, oversight, and management of a comprehensive aquatic risk management program; and designing programs that encourage educational, competitive, and recreational engagement. Additionally, this role involves staff scheduling and facility bookings of private rentals/events. Aquatic Supervisor adheres to District policies and procedures and the State of Oregon Health Department Public Swimming Pool/Spa Rules.

 

Essential Responsibilities

·         Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates part-time aquatic staff including but not limited to lead lifeguards, lifeguards, cashiers, and volunteers. Ensures employees have the necessary certifications and skills to perform assigned work. Evaluates staff work performance. Implements District policies and procedures when disciplinary action is necessary. Conducts and evaluates the lifeguard and cashier training programs on an annual basis.

·         Develops, oversees, and manages a comprehensive aquatic risk management program to minimize, monitor, and evaluate aquatic incidents.

·         Maintains appropriate records and documentation based on industry standards for Oregon State Health Codes, OSHA, MAHC, and BOLI

·         Develops, oversee, and manage lifeguard in-service training programs. Determines lifeguarding course offerings and schedules.

·         Creates and distributes the following schedules: lead lifeguard, lifeguard, cashier, and wading pool lifeguards. Ensures staff adhere to posted schedules.

·         Monitors the condition of the aquatic facility, following District standards and the State of Oregon Health Division Public Swimming Pool/Spa Rules for pool operation and security, including water chemistry.

·         Repairs, and/or alerts the Aquatics Maintenance Supervisor of any condition violating District standards or State of Oregon Health Division Swimming Pool/Spa Rules.

·         Leads and/or assists in emergency interventions and responses.

·         Collaborates with the Aquatic Director, Director of Facility Operations, and the Aquatics Maintenance Supervisor on maintenance concerns and/or repairs; collaborates on all capital improvement projects.

·         Collaborates with the Aquatic Program Supervisor and other departments as necessary for quarterly programs, special events, swim meets, training(s), facility usage, etc.

·         Assists in the development of the aquatics operating budget. Monitors and evaluates expenses and revenues with the aquatics team monthly. Evaluates the cost and procurement of equipment and supplies required for the safe operation of the District’s aquatic/fitness facility.

·         Responds to public inquires and complaints regarding staff, programs, and/or procedures. Promotes aquatic programs and changes in facility/program schedules in a timely manner.         

·         Remains current with new developments in the aquatic industry through industry publications, workshops, and conferences.

·         Ability to exercises sound professional judgment with independence across all assigned areas of supervision.

 

 Working Conditions

·      Work is performed in an environment that is at least 86° Fahrenheit with high humidity.

·      May be required to work with a variety of pool chemicals (sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite,   

calcium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, hydrochloric acid), etc.

·      May be required to lifeguard and/or teach learn to swim lessons.

·      May be required to work effectively in highly stressful situations (first aid or C.P.R. emergencies, active threats), etc.

·      May be required to lift and/or move up fifty (50) pounds.

·      Assist with the extrication of a guest from the pool.

·      This work will be performed during a regularly scheduled workday but may require working a flexible schedule, including some weekends, evenings, and on-call status as needed.

·      While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, and manipulate objects. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently.

 

Preferred Qualifications

A four-year degree is preferred in Recreation Management, Sport Management, Outdoor Recreation Leadership, Physical Education, Leisure Services, or any combination of experience and/or training that would provide the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform duties. 2-4 years’ experience supervising aquatics activities and/or programs and staff.

 

Licenses/Certifications

·      Must have a current Oregon Driver’s License.

·      Nationally recognized Lifeguard certification with CPR and First Aid

·      Nationally recognized Lifeguard Instructor certification or ablility to obtain within 6 months of hiring.

·      Nationally recognized Swim lesson/Swim lesson instructor certification.

·      AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator)/CPO (Certified Pool Operator) certification recommended.
