Partners In Driver Education
Age 15+ - Permit Required (4 wks). This 8-hour classroom course is a team approach to helping novice drivers and their coaches work together to develop habit patterns that can lead to a lifetime of safe driving practices. The course will be an excellent supplement to the 100 hours of supervised practice required of new drivers under age 18 who chose not to take an “ODOT-approved” Driver Education course because of cost or time constraints. Concepts and information presented will provide the framework for the beginning driver to continue to learn with the support of a mature, experienced driver. A licensed parent or other driving coach must attend the first class with the student. Guided practice sessions will be assigned each week. Six hours of private, in-car training (coach welcome) available for an additional fee of $265. Scheduled separately.

Week 1: Basic Nutrition
This class will review basic nutrition concepts: calories, the nutrients that we consume (fats, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins, fiber, water, phytochemicals) and healthy diets. We will look at the differences between types for fats, whole vs. refined grains and processed vs. natural sweeteners. We will review the USDA’s food pyramid recommendations, as well as the Mediterranean diet. The class will discuss how to best feed our families and teach our children proper attitudes about nutrition and food.
Tu . . . Feb 2Week 2: Label Reading
Class will focus on how to read food labels to determine if a food is good for us or not. In a review of week one, we will discuss types of fats, grains and sweeteners. We will investigate how marketers get us to buy their products, including structure/function claims, functional foods, logos, product placement in stores, and packaging. Each student will be asked to bring with them a packaged item that they consume regularly for the class to investigate.
Tu . . . Feb 9Week 3: Organic vs. Conventional Food
Does it make sense to spend the money for organic food? This is a very personal question, which parents fret about every time they walk past the produce section. We will discuss the differences in how organic vs. conventional foods are grown as well as differentiate between some of the types of organic farming practices. Environmental and personal health concerns about conventional farming, as well as nutritional differences between the two types of food will be examined. Class will taste-test the difference between organic vs. conventionally grown foods as we discuss this challenging topic. The goal of this class is to provide a basic understanding of the topic so that families may make the best choice for themselves at the checkout stand.
Tu . . . Feb 16Week 4: Shopping for Healthy Food on a Budget
This class will explore ways to navigate the grocery store, to find healthy foods, that your family will eat, that you can afford. Seems like a lot, but it's doable! Answer questions like “fresh or frozen produce?”, “100 calorie packs or big boxes” and more. Bring un-used coupons in for a coupon swap at the end of the class.
